PEORIA-Caterpillar is getting the nation's highest honor for its support of employees who protect and serve.

Wednesday, Caterpillar was named a recipient of the 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Department of Defense hands it out to employers that go above and beyond for guard and reserve employees.

Caterpillar is one of 15 U.S. companies to receive the award this year.  CAT employs more than 100 Guard and Reserve employees, and it believes this award validates its commitment to them and their families.

"Part of this award demonstrates the great support that all of our employees provide to those employees when they're called to active duty. In fact, we have an armed forces support network which actively work to support those employees and their families," said spokesperson Bridget Young.

More than 3,000 employers were nominated for the award. Caterpillar will be recognized in Washington, D.C. on September 20.
