Layoffs Starting at Caterpillar

PEORIA - Some Caterpillar workers could be temporarily out of a job. Rolling layoffs have started at an East Peoria plant and will continue through the spring.

 

Randy Smith, the vice-president for the United Auto Workers Local 974, said he expects more workers to be laid off in April He said he's hoping for things to turn around by June or July, but there's no guarantee.

 

Smith said the layoffs can last anywhere from a week to a month. He doesn't know how many workers will be affected.

 

In a statement from Caterpillar, the company said it is taking actions to bring production in line with the demand. It said it's taking steps to position the company for long term success.
