Late Week Storm Could Bring Heavy Snow to Central Illinois

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Henry, Bureau, Putnam, and La Salle counties while Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for Knox, Stark and Marshall Counties.

Round One - 6 PM Thursday through 6 PM Friday

  • Interstate 80: 6 PM Thursday to 6 PM Friday
  • Interstate 74: 6 AM Friday to 6 PM Friday

This will be a long duration event that will begin Thursday night and continue through Friday evening, especially for areas along I-80. The position of the Jet Stream will keep the snow flying through Friday evening with the heaviest snow focused north of the I-80 Corridor. The main band of snow will slowly shift south early Friday morning allowing snow to spread south across the rest of the region Friday afternoon.

Snowfall Forecast - Thursday Evening through 6 PM Friday

The heaviest snow is expected to be focused along the I-80 Corridor where 4-8 inches of snow is expected and up to 10 inches of snow will be possible locally. Some of this heavier snow may also impact parts of Marshall and Stark Counties. Further South, snowfall amounts will become noticeably lighter along and south of I-74. Locations between I-74 and I-80 could see more or less accumulation if the band of snow shifts north of south by 10 miles. Snowfall amounts will ramp up quick north of a Galesburg to Pontiac line.

Round Two - 12 AM Saturday through Noon Sunday

All of Central Illinois

An area of low pressure is expected to pass south of the region with an upper-level wave moving overhead on Saturday. Snow should redevelop in the morning and continue throughout the day. Thunderstorms developing across the south may also act to limit moisture which would limit snowfall amounts across the region.

Snowfall Forecast - 12 AM Saturday through Noon Sunday

Additional snowfall accumulations are expected to range from 2-4 inches from Friday night through Sunday morning. Locally higher amounts of 3-5 inches will be possible.

Storm Total (Thursday through Sunday) Snowfall Forecast
