12 Days of Giving: Doctors witness Children's Hospital care from the other side of the bed

PEORIA - The tables were turned for one couple in the birth of their youngest child. What began as a scary situation changed their family and their jobs forever.

3-year-old Zayan is a non-stop burst of energy.

"He's just a loving kid. He loves to play and has a great imagination," say his parents.

Zayan's parents both work with kids at Children's Hospital of Illinois. Zohra Moeenudinn is the director of a pediatric clinic; Jawad Javed works in teh Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU.

But all of their experience could not prepare them for what happened during their last pregnancy. Two months before Zayan was due, something wasn't right, so they decided to get a checkup. Zohra went into emegency delivery. Born premature, Zayan spent 10 days in the NICU, the very department his dad works every day.

"All that rush of emotions came all of a sudden," says Dr. Javed. "I'm the doctor and all of a sudden I'm the dad in that situation."

Two doctors who make their living helping others care for children suddenly found themselves on the other side of the bed.

"I realized, 'wow, feeding a premature baby is very different,'" says Zohra. The way you hold, the care you have to give. So I really relied on a lot of those nurses to teach me how to be a mom of a premature baby."

Jawad adds, "The one solacing, comforting fact was I knew we were in a center that was able to provide the care necessary. And I knew the people that were around to help take care of my baby were the best in the business."

Today, Zayan is a playful kid who loves video games and time with his siblings. His parents say he never meets a stranger.

"We joke around now that the reason he came out is that he was ready. He was bored in there by himself."

"He is the one that has completed the family. Every day we look at him and are in awe and amazement at what a beautiful child he is."

The care this family received and provides at Children's Hospital of Illinois wouldn't be possible without generous donations from people in the community. Children's Hospital of Illinois' annual Radiothon is coming up December 7th and 8th. John Riley from 93.3 The Drive will broadcast from the Children's Hospital live from 6:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. those days. You can make a contribution in-person or over the phone by calling (309) 624-GIVE. All proceeds are used to serve the needs of pediatric patients.
