Bloomington Terminates Metro Zone

The council voted to end the agreement at Monday's meeting.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Bloomington City Council has officially terminated its Metro Zone agreement with the Town of Normal.

The agreement has been in place for 30 years and allows the two communities to share tax revenue from the cities' west sides.

Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner says, over the last decade, the agreement has favored Normal. Bloomington pays the town more than a million dollars each year.

Normal officials have said they're disappointed that the city is ending the agreement on their own. But Renner says he's looking towards the future of the Twin Cities.

"What we are hoping to do moving forward is to get an agreement that consistent with B-N Advantage, that takes all of the assets of our community into account, not just focusing on one sector. The Metro Zone was only focusing on one sector," he explains.

The city is expecting to save some money in next year's budget, now that the agreement has been terminated. The council heard the FY18 budget proposal Monday. They are considering a $214 million dollar budget, up three percent from last year.
