Bradley students lobby for MAP grants in Springfield

1,100 Bradley students receive more than $4000 in grant funding.

PEORIA - - PEORIA - Students relying on map grants say their education may be in jeopardy if lawmakers do not figure out the funding. Wednesday, they took their message to Springfield.

"It's time to get our act together," said political science major Gerry Regep.

Regep, a Bradley junior, has strong words for state lawmakers. He is one of several students who expressed concerns at the State Capitol regarding MAP grant’s uncertainty. The group also met individually with local representatives.

“The MAP grant has been probably the number one thing contributing to my financial comfortability,” said Regep. “(And the) burden of paying for college and making it easier for family back home.

The students joined dozens of their peers-- from other colleges --lobbying in Springfield. Roughly 1,100 Bradley students receive more than $4000 from the Monetary Assistance Program, but the grant hangs in the balance of the budget crisis.

Victoria Magna cannot afford to lose it.

"It came down to whether or not I could finish school," said Magna.

Magna is a junior and first generation college student. So is Regep - who was raised in the single parent home of a school teacher.

“Having a mom who's already picking up another job back at school, having to pick up two to three odd jobs at school myself - it's a matter of just making things harder," he said.

Making things harder, he says, in a situation that's already hard enough.
