Carle Illinois College of Medicine welcomes first class

SPRINGFIELD - (WCIA) - 32 Students will soon be the first class to enter the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

It's the first engineering-based medical school and it will be located in Champaign-Urbana. The students will get a four-year, full-ride scholarship.

Recently, the school received preliminary accreditation. It means the school will soon be able to start reccruiting fugturer students. It's a collaboration between UI and Carle Health System.

The vision is to integrate engineering principals with medical education. Faculty say it will open up a new side to the field of medicine.

The college will have classes in several buildings on the UI campus. Renovations have already begun at the Medical Science Building and Everitt Lab. The hope is to some day build an additional lab.

The first class will start late next summer. Students can begin applying in November. The scholarships are funded by donors and friends of the college.

There will be two open houses before the end of the year: October and November.
