Cell Phones in the Classroom Not a Distraction

We check in with Farmington one year after cell phone policy implemented.

FARMINGTON, Ill. - Districts across the central Illinois are embracing the cell phone in the classroom. We checked in with Farmington School District one year after they implemented their new cell phone policy.

Students can keep their silenced phone on them as long as they are put away.

The high school's principal says teachers are even using the new policy to their advantage.

"Teachers love it because they're not fighting the inevitable with kids having the phones, and we're really taking the responsible use approach and it's really worked out quite well," Principal Brad Hulet said.

Teachers are using the cell phones in their curriculum like art students drawing self portraits from selfies or gym students tracking their progress with apps.
