Duckworth reiterates importance of Peoria's Ag Lab after budget proposes closure

PEORIA - Senator Tammy Duckworth visited the Ag Lab in Peoria Wednesday.

Under President Trump's proposed budget, there would be significant cuts to the Department of Agriculture, which includes shutting the lab.

Duckworth says keeping it open is imperative to the local economy.

"I feel optimistic that we can together come back with some dollar amount that is better than what the White House is proposing," says Duckworth. "Right now the cuts that the President is proposing would just be devastating to this region."

There's a bipartisan push to keep the Ag Lab open. Last month, Duckworth teamed up with Senator Dick Durbin, as well as Representatives Darin LaHood, Adam Kinzinger, and Cheri Bustos to write a letter to President Trump, pleading with him to keep the funding.
