Durbin visits Illinois Veterans' Home

Since 2015 IVH Quincy has had 13 people die from Legionnaires disease

QUINCY, Il. - In the midst of growing concerns about Legionnaires disease at the Quincy Veterans Home, Senator Dick Durbin is calling for a review of the state's response.

“In no way shape or form can we declare mission accomplished, our job is not finished here,” said Durbin.

Since 2015, more than 60 people have contracted Legionnaires disease and 13 have died at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. Senator Durbin says the epidemic is concerning and there's more the state can do to better protect those who have served.

“We need to focus on the areas where it appears to be more prevalent,” Durbin said. He adds, “It would be an investment to repair and replace plumbing in these facilities, so that there are no questions and we've done everything we can for our veterans.”

Durbin acknowledges the spread of diseases are a challenge to facilities throughout the state, adding that all patients, especially veterans, deserve the best care possible.

“We want to make sure that the veterans coming here get every dollar in benefits that they're entitled to and they’re entitled to their government. We promised them if they served our country we would stand by them in their years of service and retirement,” Durbin added.

Earlier this week, Governor Bruce Rauner checked himself into the facility. Durbin applauds Rauner's efforts to better understand the facility's daily operations.

“It shows that it's high on his priority list and that was my goal.” Durbin adds, “I've said to him I've challenged him, I've invited him to come up with a new plan, let us help you for the funding on that through the US Department of Veterans Administration.”

A hearing will be held Tuesday to discuss possible Legislation to improve the home.
