Exhibit pays tribute to Caterpillar co-founder

PEORIA - A new exhibit at the Doug Oberhelman Caterpillar Visitors Center is paying tribute to one of the company's co-founders.

"Benjamin Holt: Tracks Around the World" opened Wednesday. The exhibit tells the story of the accomplishments of Holt's lifetime. He was the owner of Holt Manufacturing Company, which combined with CL Best Tractor Company in 1925 to form Caterpillar.

His company also owned the Caterpillar trademark, which is still used today.

"What I think is exciting about this exhibit: we were not only developing it here at Caterpillar, we are also able to work with family, the relatives of one of our great founders Benjamin Holt," says Lee Fosburgh of Caterpillar Heritage Services.

Holt also created the first commercially successful track-type tractor in 1904.
