Family uses Halloween to educate, after losing young son to suicide

'Keegan's Krew' hosted a Halloween Haven

PEORIA, Ill. - A local mother who lost her young son to suicide is using Halloween as a way to cope and educate the community. 11-year-old Keegan Beal took his life earlier this year after being bullied.

Halloween was Keegan's favorite holiday. His mom, Kelly Beal, knew it would be a tough day so she came up with her own way to mourn. A group of students from Bradley helped her create "Keegan's Haunted Haven" as part of a service project. The backyard of the family home welcomed trick or treaters to take part in some of Keegan's favorite things, from games to sweet treats.

It also offered a place for parents to sit down and have a conversation about what Keegan's Krew is doing. A part of that, is opening Keegan's home as a permanent haven for kids. The vision is to fill different rooms with art, music, culinary, and beauty classes, providing a safe and non-intimidating way for kids to talk about their day and their feelings.

"I'm kind of trying to give to the community what I gave to Keegan because I thought that he was an amazing kid and I feel like maybe we can help more kids be amazing kids you know that are just loving and appreciate uniqueness in other people." Beal says.

Tuesday's event was just an introduction to the safe haven. To learn more about what Keegan's Krew has planned, click here.
