Feedback sought for Towanda Barnes, Ireland Grove intersection

Bloomington and McLean County officials held a public meeting Wednesday.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A congested intersection in Bloomington could be getting improvements soon. But before anything's done, city leaders want your feedback.

The city is looking at ways to alleviate traffic at the Towanda Barnes and Ireland Grove intersection. For years, the intersection has seen back ups from Unit 5 schools and state farm employees during peak hours.

The project's $1.6 million price tag is supposed to be split between the city of Bloomington and McLean county. Work on the intersection was supposed to start this year, but the plan was delayed when the county board sent the measure back to its transportation committee.

Now, city leaders are asking neighbors to look at options and give their opinions.

One of the main components of the plan is a free-flowing right hand turn lane, going south on Towanda Barnes to Ireland Grove.

At a public meeting Wednesday, several people they're tired of dealing with back ups.

Danna Boore who lives in the area says, "It's been horrid. There are times when you are backed up 15 or 20 minutes that you may not have built into your schedule and you're late. And they just need to do something to improve traffic."

Not everyone is sold on the project. One man told WMBD the project seems like overkill. He says it might be necessary in the next few years, but it's not bad enough to make such drastic changes right now.

After project leaders gather public feedback, they will bring it back to the city council and county board for further consideration.
