Final Spot for Peoria At-Large Election Decided by One Vote

PEORIA - With all votes now counted in the primary election for the two vacant Peoria City Council at-large seats, only one vote separate the fourth and fifth place candidates. The final election results approved by the Peoria Election Commission shows Rob Hanauer had one more vote than Amr Elsamny. The results mean Hanauer will join fellow candidates John Kelly, Sid Ruckriegel and Zach Oyler on the ballot in April to determine which two candidates will win the two vacant at-large council seats.

Elsamny says he plans to challenge the final results. On election night, Elsamny led Hanauer by eight votes, but the tide turned as mail-in ballots arrived to be counted. Elsamny says his challenge comes from the fact Hanauer had 217 mail-in votes compared to his 96. He also claims all of the votes for him were not counted.

The final count certified by the election commission Thursday has Hanauer with 2,004 votes and Elsamny with 2,003. The consolidated election is April 4th
