Fire crews respond to fire at Mapleton chemical plant

MAPLETON, Ill. – Fire fighters from multiple agencies battled a fire at a plant in Mapleton Thursday afternoon. The blaze broke out at Lanxess, formerly known as Chemtura, around 2:15pm. 

Joe Needham with the Peoria County Sheriff's Office says the fire was chemical in nature and was believed to have started in a tank. A fire retardant other than water had to be used to extinguish it. 

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage have not been determined,.
