Former City Council Candidate Says Election Re-Count is Proving Successful

Amr Elsamny says the discovery recount revealed 60 unmatched voter signatures

PEORIA, Ill. - A former candidate in the race for Peoria's at-large city council seat says the re-count he ordered is proving to be a success.

Amr Elsamny says the discovery recount revealed 60 unmatched voter signatures.

Last week, Elsamny announced he's suing the Peoria County Election Commission, saying they lost several mail-in ballots, causing him to lose by a single vote.

However, the Election Commission says it has a team of election judges, one democrat and one republican, to compare mail-in signatures with those on file, to verify voters are who they say they are. The Election Commission says all mail-in ballots were also re-tabulated.

"When we re-ran all of those ballots and our election day votes and and our early votes, the results came out exactly the same as what we canvassed for the primary election." Assistant Executive Director of the Peoria County Election Commission, Elizabeth Gannon, said.

The Election Commission says it's now up to Elsamny whether to take the signatures in front of a judge.

"He can take what he believes to be those 60 signatures that were unmatched and he can maybe take a case in front of judge to see what the judge feels is the best move forward on that." Gannon said.

The Election Commission says it hopes this serves as a reminder to voters that every vote counts.

"For all those people out there that think my vote doesn't count it's not going to affect the outcome, look at this election, he lost by one vote, so your vote really does make a difference and you really should participate." Gannon explained.
