History comes to life in Bloomington-Normal

Lincoln's Festival on Route 66 gave a glimpse into the U.S.'s past this weekend.

Bloomington-Normal - Bloomington-Normal celebrated their heritage this weekend, with Lincoln's Festival on Route 66. The festival celebrates the community connect to Abraham Lincoln, and the mother road. The Mclean County Museum of History had events for families all weekend.

"It's particularly challenging sometimes because history kinds is, oh it's boring, it's not much fun, here we bring the history to life, we try to make it interactice and engaging for all ages" said Candace Summers of the Mclean County Museum of History.

Families even got a glimpse at life in the 1860's, with the 10th Illinois Volunteer Calvary. The calvary set up camp by Illinois Wesleyan University's campus, complete with horses and period gear.

"(The civil war) was the most important time in our history, that defined who we are as a county, when we had to fight eachother. But today like i said it's getting not glossed over, but passed by so fast cause of all the history we have. We've decided along with a lot of other units to become living history units" said calvary member Ted Henry.

Henry said they pride themselves on showing kids how life once was.

"It's out here to teach the kids, give them some hands on skills, let them ask questions. 'Is that real wool? What do you do with the fire? What do you do? Are those weapons real?' So it gives them a chance to see, the history books aren't that dry, there really was people from that time period... these were the fighting men in the 1860's."

Even in the intense summer heat, they still enjoy their piece of history.

"It is warm, on weekends when it's really hot, we've done this in 80 or 90 degree temperatures, you'll lose 20 pounds of water weight in one weekend. We call it the Jenny Craig weight loss of the 1860's!" said Henry.
