How the Solar Eclipse Will Impact the Weather

The eclipse will affect the weather on Monday, August 21, 2017...

With the summer season winding down and students getting back on a new routine, Mother Nature will also alter her schedule on August 21, 2017. Our own Lauren Rainson talked with National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Miller about how the upcoming eclipse will impact the weather across Central Illinois.

On a typical day, the highest amount of solar insolation occurs around midday; however, insolation will quickly decline early afternoon on August 21st, due to the deepest point of the eclipse. Temperatures are expected to cool nearly five degrees around midday because of the dimmer sunlight. Meteorologist Chris Miller says, "If we have plenty of sunshine available just before noon, we should see [temperatures] drop off a good four to five degrees by 1:15 pm." Cloud cover will play a large role in not only viewing the eclipse but how much the eclipse will cool early afternoon temperatures. With more cloud cover, the solar eclipse won't be as viewer friendly, and temperatures will not drop off as much. Miller compares the midday temperature decline "similar to what you'd see during dusk most evenings." Once the solar eclipse completely wraps up, in the Peoria Area, around 2:45 pm CDT, solar insolation will increase and temperatures will warm again.
