Illinois' People Action Hopes to Create Sanctuary City in Bloomington/Normal

Plan to present ordinance at next council meeting

BLOOMINGTON - A group in the Twin Cities is taking a stand on the immigration debate.

They want to pass an ordinance called “Welcoming Cities Community.”

It would effectively create a sanctuary city in Bloomington and Normal.

Similar ordinances have passed in Champaign and Cook counties.

Leaders say the immigrant community in the Twin Cities is living in fear.

Illinois’ People Action Leader Sonny Garcia told us, "Children are crying at schools because they have no idea when they come home if their parents are going to be there or not. Mothers and fathers are scared about their children when they go to school whether they are going to come home or not."

The group plans to present their ordinance at the next city council meeting.
