BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Improvements are expected on Jefferson St. in the upcoming months. Jefferson was rated a 3 by city officials, meaning it is in need of repairs very soon to continue functioning as a usable street. Bloomington Committee of the Whole met today to discuss the possibility of the changes to the street and the downtown area.
"When the task force was out presenting our presentation. This photo got more comments than any other photo and they were unanimously positive," said Amelia Buragas, Bloomington Alderwoman. "People really liked this and this was just one example of a shared street"
The most controversial option discussed was the shared street model. A shared street is a street where the bike lane, road and sidewalk are all one level. This model would effectively improve aesthetics of downtown making it a definite tourist destination. The only problem is, the estimates that were shown in the meeting for the model, would cost nearly a million dollars to implement.
Most of the council members were displeased with the idea. The official future of the street will determined on April 23rd after a council vote.
