Local non-profit helps Houston during tropical storm

NORMAL - A Twin Cities non-profit is doing what it can to help those affected by the storm.

200 people rallied at Normal's Midwest Food Bank to pack disaster boxes, filled with food and supplies. One family is helping out after being stuck in Bloomington when their flight back home to Houston, was cancelled.

"We're here with family, and needed to do something,” said Tim Fisher, a Houston resident, volunteering at the Midwest Food Bank. “Needed to find a way to be able to help out."

The Fishers came to Bloomington under unfortunate circumstances; a family member passing. When their flight back to Houston was canceled, they decided to gather as a family to help their friends back home.

"We've been watching our house on our security cameras outside, so we're seeing what's going on with our house and nervous as were watching what's going on there,” said Fisher.

The Fishers may be safe in the Twin Cities, but they've watched as their home starts to flood, and as their neighbors and friends have been evacuated from their homes.

"We're happy that we're safe, that we're here that we're together, that we're family,” said Fisher. “But still worried about what's going on with friends back there, our house, those different types of things."

Tim said instead of dwelling on what they can't do in Houston, they are doing what they can here at Normal's Midwest Food Bank.

"Our hope is with those, is that they would be encouraged to know that we are thinking of them, praying for them, and want to provide for them,” said Phil Hodel, Midwest Food Bank Communications Director.

The Salvation Army asked the food bank to send two more semi-truck loads, in addition to two that were sent before the storm. A hand-written letter from a volunteer goes into every box sent to the families in Houston.

"This will be an on-going effort,” said Hodel. "Sure, given the magnitude of this disaster, we will be sending relief for a while."
