Local woman finds comfort after loss through adult coloring

Carol Olson lost her husband Dale to ALS in 2016

PEKIN, Ill. - A local woman is finding comfort by putting pencil to paper. "Adult Coloring" is her therapy of choice.

When Carol Olson's husband was diagnosed wiht a debilitating disease, she didn't know how to handle the stress.

It turns out the solution was much simpler than she thought, a childhood pastime, that now has new meaning.

"I found coloring that I can put it down or sit there and color and just lose myself in it." Olson says.

But little did Olson know, when she set out to color that very first picture, that coloring would help her find herself again.

"It got to the point where I had to be with him constantly." Olson says.

Olson's husband of 46 years, Dale, got the diagnosis, ALS, in 2014. A librarian by day, Olson was so distraught with his decline she found herself unable to pick up a book, so, instead, Dale suggested a simpler solution to keep her mind off of things, coloring.

"I got my first coloring book and colors and it's gone wild since then." Olson says.

300 pictures later, that simple suggestion has helped Olson cope with losing her husband.

"You wipe out everything you just sit there and you focus and think about nothing else but coloring and you can color out of the line, you can color over the other color." Olson explains.

Olson says the more challenging the picture, the better. She calls it the best kind of therapy.

As Olson, escapes to another world inside a page of her coloring book, she finds inner peace, all while she creates a masterpiece.

"It's been very powerful, it's like, it's my life right now." Olson says.
