Man's Best Friend

Through the ups and downs, your furry friend is always by your side.

And that may be why the term ‘man’s best friend’ was created.

Now, a study over at Cambridge university suggests children prefer their pet, over their own siblings.

“The fact that pets cannot understand or talk back may even be a benefit as it means they are completely non-judgmental,” said Matt Cassels, lead author at Cambridge University.

To see if it was true, we talked with Kitty Yanko, education coordinator over at Peoria Animals Welfare Shelter (PAWS).

Yanko said this is probably true because pets have unconditional love for their owner.

But while we were there, we talked about some of the benefits of having a pet.

If a child grows up around a pet, the individual is more inclined to take on more positive qualities such as empathy, respect, and kindness.

Because an individual gains these trains, research shows that the child is more likely to go into a helping profession as an adult.

“I definitely think kids should have pets,” said Yanko. I think that gives them a broader spectrum of what relationships are about. I think it makes them more caring, respectful, and empathetic.”

So, when your child asks for a pet, think about the positive impacts a pet could have on your child’s future career.
