Many taking advantage of 24/7 shelters during freezing temperatures

PEORIA, Ill - Bone-chilling temperatures are still sweeping through Central Illinois, and many in Peoria are taking shelter in places like the dream center.

The Dream Center became a 24 hour facility just six months ago and employees say the number of people they welcome each night has skyrocketed.

Last month an average of 45 people slept there each night, however last night brought a -10 wind chill and 65 people stayed at the center.

“We have doubled our number since we've went to 24 hours a day on August 14th, and we weren't quite open for a full 6 months,” said Director of Homeless and Housing Kristy Schofield.
