Mayor Tari Renner awarded while trip abroad

BLOOMINGTON - Mayor Tari Renner received the Ambassador of Goodwill Citizenship Award while on his delegation to Asahikawa, Japan, Bloomington-Normal’s Sister City.

“It is my honor and privilege to accept the Ambassador of Goodwill Citizenship award. I was especially humbled to receive the award in Asahikawa,” said Renner. The award is given to a person who advocates for a specific cause on the basis of their notability. Both Mayor Renner and former Bloomington-Normal Sister City Chairperson Harriet Steinbach received the award.  

Renner was in Asahikawa in honor of the official anniversary of the two Sister Cities relationship. During the trip the mayor had the chance to meet with local officials and tour various notable locations. The trip happens approximately every ten years. Renner explains, “The award ceremony was one of many highlights of this trip, which benefits Bloomington greatly by creating cultural, educational and information exchanges and promoting lifelong relationships between people and communities.”

Mayor Renner looks forward to Hosting a delegation from Japan in Bloomington-Normal sometime in the future. Over the past 55 years, the two cities have exchanged approximately 300 students, among achieving other community building projects. Mayor Renner describes it as a “truly wonderful partnership.”
