Mexico Buying Corn Elsewhere

Corn farmers in Central Illinois may be in trouble

Mexico, one of the top corn buyers for the United States, may be choosing to get its corn elsewhere.

Mexican senator, Armando Rios Piter, wants to introduce a bill that will allow Mexico to get its corn  from Brazil and Argentina.

Back in 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) created free trade among the United State, Canada and Mexico.

“It made the North American countries; Canada, United States, Mexico, the largest trading pact of anywhere in the world,” said Patrick Kirchhofer, manger at Peoria County Farm Bureau.

NAFTA created over 15 million jobs across the country.

According to the Illinois Corn Growers Association, U.S. agricultural exports to Mexico have quintupled over the past 20 years.

Last year, the United States exported 500 million bushels of corn to Mexico … that’s over $2.5 billion.

20 million of those bushels came from Peoria County.

If Mexico were to pass this bill, it will not only impact corn prices locally, it will also hinder the national economy.

“Corn prices are around $3.30 a bushel,” said Kirchhofer. “Our trade to Mexico is 500 million bushels of corn. So, if you do the calculation, it’s significant. It’s a threat that needs to be taken seriously.”

Corn is the number one crop in the State of Illinois.

With a lack of demand in corn, local farmers may shift to the number two crop in the State…

“We’re probably going to see more acres shift to soybeans as compared to corn for this upcoming growing season,” said Kirchhofer.
