Normal Mayor declares his support for DACA

NORMAL - DACA is currently under review, and Normal Mayor Chris Koos has now joined the list of U.S. mayors and other government officials who support extending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.  Mayor Koos is urging the Trump Administration to defend the program.

“I join my mayor-colleagues in encouraging President Trump and his Administration to demonstrate a commitment to the American economy and the ideals of our nation by continuing DACA until Congress modernizes our immigration system and provides a more permanent form of relief for these individuals,” said Koos.

DACA provides individuals who meet certain criteria, work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. To qualify for the program applicants must have arrived to the US before the age of 16, be enrolled in school, have a degree, or be enrolled in the military. In addition, applicants go through a rigorous background check. Since the initiation of the program nearly 800,000 individuals have used DACA to become fully contributing members of their communities by being allowed to work legally without fear of deportation, paying taxes and contributing to growing the economy. Mayor Koos said, “Continuation of this program is important not just to DACA recipients and their families, but also to our cities and our nation.”

Nearly 90% of DACA recipients are employed by American business, and 6% have started their own businesses. 15.3% of DACA recipient’s wages go into funding Social Security and Medicare; adding up to approximately 10 billion in tax contributions.

GOP state law makes have threatened to take on DACA, challenging the constitutionality of the program, saying President Obama did not have the authority to pass the deferred action.

This leaves the Trump Administration with three options; halt new, and renewal of DACA permits, continue them or choose to not defend the program in court. State Law makers plan to move forward with the court process by September, 5th
