Partisan Gerrymandering Debate

The State of Wisconsin is going up against the US Supreme Court.

In Fall of 2017, the US Supreme Court will reule whether the partisan gerrymandering will be allowed, not only in Wisconsin, but throughout the entire country.

"Every 10 years, there's a Census,' said Brad McMillan, professor at the Institute of Principle Leadership at Bradley University. "So, the population shifts. And so, whether it's a state legistlated district or a congressional district, you're supposed to have, roughly, the same population in each of those districts."

Re-districting should be based on population.

But sometimes, representatives use a different reason.

"Political people, behind closed doors, look at people's voting histories and try to create districts that will be safe for their political party," said McMillan.

And that's the problem Wisconsin is also facing.

"The federal courts in Wisconsin ruled that the last maps drawn were partisan gerrymandering," said McMillan.

This is the first time a federal court has ruled a state violated partisan gerrymandering laws.

"If the US Supreme Court comes up with a clear formula saying that you cannot cross this line in drawing legislative maps for political purposes, then that is something that can apply in Illinois right away," said McMillan.

And this is something McMillan is excited about.

"If you have fair map drawing, then what ends up happening is we have competitive elections," said McMillan.

This ruling in Wisconsin could not only re-draw districts in Central Illinois, but it could also create a fair and competitive voting environment.

"This is the one thing that can actually make a big difference in turning Illinois in a better direction," said McMillan.
