Peaceful walk for man shot by police

PEORIA, Ill - Friends and family of Eddie Russell Jr. held a peaceful march on Peoria’s Southside this afternoon. Many in attendance asking for Justice for Junior. The walk started at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. More than 50 community members participated walking through the Warehouse District to the police department with police escorts.

Community members held signs that read 'who can we trust' and pleaded for answers regarding the shooting of Eddie Russell Jr. Russell Jr's father says the system failed his family. He believes his son would still be alive if he was able to talk with him.

“I’m the best negotiator out here because he came from my loins,” said Eddie Russel Sr. He added, “We got a heart to heart thing going on. We communicate,  if nothing else at the end of the day he would have come out after hearing the protection of his father’s voice.”

Peoria Police Chief Jerry Mitchell says he has reached out to the family and invited them to the department for conversation.

“We understand that right now emotions are raw,” Mitchell said. He adds, “They just lost a loved one and we understand that so we want to respect that time so when they're ready, hopefully they'll come in and have some dialogue with us.”

Chief Mitchell believes the walk is a healthy movement, and necessary for Peoria to grow.

“We had peaceful demonstrations 3 years 2 years ago, related to things that were happening 1,400 miles from here, that is still healthy and we encourage that type of activity we want that. It’s healing for our community."

Peoria Community Against Violence will hold a "Stand Up For Peace" event Monday, September 25th at 6pm at Church of the Living God.
