Peoria Community Against Violence Comes together for 2nd Murder Stand Down of 2017

The gathering is in response to the death of 24-year-old Raheem Wilson

PEORIA, Ill. - The community is coming together to support a family who lost a loved one to violence and send a message that it's not tolerated here.

Peoria Community Against Violence will gather in response to a shooting Thursday night that turned deadly. This is the 2nd time PCAV has come together this year. This time, it's for a  24-year-old who lost his life after being shot at Thrush and Broadway.

Candles and a flower now mark the block where 24-year-old Raheem Wilson lived. Wilson was shot in the pelvis and died from his injuries Thursday night.

"Once again it's disturbing, I mean this is our second month already been our second murder stand down, it's disturbing." Peoria Community against Violence Chairman, Terry Burnside, said.

Several hours after Wilson was shot, another shooting took place on the dance floor at Club Envy, sending another man to the hospital.

Terry Burnside is the chairman for Peoria Community Against Violence, a group with a message that lives up to its name.

"We're not going to tolerate the violence in the city of Peoria and we're tired." Burnside said.

If Burnside sounds like a broken record, he says it's because he and the group won't stop fighting for this community and he says that effort starts before the violence does.

"I'm a firm believer if we have more programming more opportunities for a lot of these younger guys they will be less prone to be involved in negative criminal activity." Burnside said.

Burnside started P-Town Car Club, a group to mentor children and teens in the community, pumping the brakes on violence before it happens.

"If we hear about a couple guys getting into it, we'll bring them to the table ‘Hey, what can we do to help diffuse the situation.’" Burnside explained.

Until there's no violence in the river city, PCAV will continue to stand together against it.

"We just keep on supporting the families I mean that's kind of what we do with PCAV to let the families know they are not alone, we are in the plight with them as well." Burnside said.

No word on any arrests yet in connection to the shooting. Peoria Police arrested two people in connection to the shooting at Club Envy.
