Peoria Firefighters' Union Calls Proposed Cuts "Detrimental" to Firefighters' and Your Safety

The proposal includes decommissioning truck, not filling 11 vacant positions

PEORIA, Ill. - The Peoria Fire Department, tasked with cutting $1 million from its budget, now says a reduction in staff or services will be detrimental to both its firefighters and your safety.

Peoria Firefighters' Union Local 50 held a press conference Monday responding to the proposal to decommission a fire truck and cut 11 vacant firefighter positions.

It says the national standard recommends 4 people per truck. Peoria Fire only has 3.

Local 50 adds that fire doubles in size with every minute that passes and these cuts would have a ripple effect on response times.

"You could say that, well, this closure is not going to be in my neighborhood. You might be correct. But the way we'll be tasked with less resources will be to shuffle our existing resources around and we're already playing with a loaded gun." Local 50 President, Ryan Brady, explains.

The union says it shared other solutions with city leaders like increasing fees or charging for service to outlying communities. The firefighters' union urged people at Monday's press conference to voice concerns to city council.
