Peoria Police Department is holding off on new officers

The City of Peoria is looking at an almost $8 million deficit.

And because Peoria Police are the largest department within the city, it also makes up a big chunk of the overall budget.

Because of that, the department will currently not be hiring any new officers.

At the moment, Peoria Police have nine positions available for uniform patrol.

But in order to help the deficit, the department has decided to hold on filling these position until the budget is balanced.

"As a team, we're going to look at what services may be affected," says Chief Jerry Mitchell with Peoria Police. "But the first and only service that we have to provide, and to ensure the safety of the public, is that we respond to all calls for service."

Peoria Police will still have 220 sworn commissioned officers to respond to emergencies within the community.

And Chief Mitchell promises the department will continue to complete all of its duties around Peoria.
