Pritzker talks opposition to school funding bill

PEORIA - Democratic candidate for governor J.B. Pritzker slammed Gov. Bruce Rauner over the school funding bill that passed the General Assembly this week, saying the measure is part of a broader "right-wing agenda."

"He's got this right-wing agenda that he wants to bring to the state of Illinois," said Pritzker. "It was a hidden agenda that he's had under his Carhartt jacket, apparently, when he ran for governor. It's the Koch brothers right-wing agenda that says he wants to destroy unions, that says he wants to lower wages in the state and, apparently, it means he wants to privatize education, too."

Prtizker made the comments during a stop in Peoria Wednesday evening as his campaign marked the opening of a field office in the River City.

The visit was part of a 22-stop bus tour across the state, which the campaign calls "Think Big."

Pritzker targeted the five-year, $75 million tax credit program included in the legislation, aimed at helping kids in underperforming public schools attend private schools.

"The challenge with the bill, certainly, was that it opens a whole new avenue for funding private schools with public money, so that is something that is more than just something that is small in a bill," Pritzker explained. "The second is that compromise, if I had been governor, I would have been in the room to work on that compromise to make sure that it's something that truly would work for public education and not for private individuals or wealthy people that wanna give to that fund and get a huge tax credit out of it."

The program gives tax breaks to people who donate to private schools. The schools then use the money for scholarships.

Pritzker appeared with his running mate state Rep. Juliana Stratton (D-Chicago).

You can hear more from Pritzker during an exclusive interview Sunday on Central Illinois On the Record.
