Restoring the grounds of a place close to home for veterans

PeoriaCorps is a local group that dedicates its time to helping the community. And the organization is focusing on promoting 'green sustainability' while volunteering.

"The city has taken on as an initiative to address the green infrastructure opportunities that are coming down the pipeline in jobs," says Jamila Wilson, PeoriaCorps program director.

And the group knew the perfect place to help for Veterans Day.

"We have identified VFW on the south side as a space we would like to beautify," says Wilson.

"The green infrastructure that was in there, it was just all messed up," says Raivyan Criss, participant. "Trash was everywhere, the bushes were not attended so they were just dying and we're bringing it back to life."

Volunteers weeded, swept and planted new flowers to make the area more attractive. The group wanted to make sure it was ready for veterans to commemorate the day.

"We are very proud of the work that men and women who serve our community and serve our country have done and continue to do," says Wilson.
