Robots Roll Into Central Illinois

The FIRST Robotics Competition is being held in Peoria this weekend.

PEORIA, Ill. - The FIRST Robotics Competition Central Illinois Regional rolled its way to Bradley's Renaissance Coliseum for the annual showcase this weekend.

About 40 teams, made up of high school students from five Midwest states, put their robots to the test. Each team starts with the same materials and has six weeks to design and build their robot. The robots have to complete tasks and challenges. This year, the robots even had to interact with humans during the challenge.

"Technologically it becomes more sophisticated every year. Every year they roll out a new game and the challenge becomes increasingly more difficult. You have to package the robot into a tighter size," explained Chairman Tim Koch.

Organizers say the competition promotes careers in science and technology, as well as a sense of competition. The defending champions are the Treemont Roboteers.
