Students get hands-on experience in healthcare industry

PEORIA - The healthcare industry employs more than 18,000 people in the Peoria area.

This week, local high schoolers are getting hands-on experience in the field. ICC, UnityPoint Health, and OSF Healthcare all teamed up for a career fair Monday at the JUMP Center.

Students learned about real world scenarios, getting experience with respiratory therapy, EMT rescue, and surgical technology.

"We hope that the hands-on activities helps expose the students to opportunities to see professions that they might not be aware of. And so, for example, the respiratory therapy session they're actually intubating mannequins and they're blowing up real live animal heart and lungs, so that's exciting for them," says ICC Dean of Health Careers, Wendee Guth.

The fair continues Tuesday, and will host more than 300 students total.
