The do's and dont's for leaving pets outside this winter

What you need to know for your four legged friend

With the dog days of summer behind us, we'll soon be running from our cars to the heat of indoors, avoiding the bitter cold. But your furry friends may not be able do the same.

"They have fur, but you know they get cold just like we do. So if it's cold for you it's probably cold for your pet" said Kitty Yanko, with Peoria County Animal Protection Services.

So how much cold can a dog or cat handle?

"You know they can only maintain a certain body temperature for so long" said Yanko.

Dog lover Rolinda Baty agrees. "It's just too cold for them, if you can't stand it outside I'm sure they can't either."

If leaving your pet indoors isn't an option, make sure they have an adequate outdoor shelter.

"We always recommend that the house has obviously floors and a roof and something that gets them off the ground and then also something in the front of the house to prevent that wind from coming in" said Yanko.

It may seem cozy, but blankets can freeze in certain conditions. Swap it for straw or hay instead. Another killer? Exposure to Antifreeze.

"Make sure that if they're in a garage area that they don't have access to anti-freeze because they actually like the taste of it and hey can lick it and it can be fatal and deadly for them" said Yanko.

"They just shouldn't be left out, they should be inside. If we need to be inside warm, they should be too."

If you see a neighbor's dog left in freezing conditions, Kitty urges to call the police. You may save their life.

"Every winter we get calls where the temperatures are so extreme that you know the animal has actually frozen to death and so it's extremely important for people to call in those situations."

Pay attention to the wind chill too. And when in doubt, don't leave them out.

"It's not a good life for them" said Yanko, "it's not a good existence".
