PEORIA, Il. - For many couples Valentine's Day is all about sharing those ‘wow’ moments.
Whether it be through a bouquet of flowers or treating one another to a romantic dinner, there is money to be spent.
For those businesses who are making a buck or two along the way, they say they do all the prep work for the smiles and joy for those involved.
Becks Florist in East Peoria has been shooting cupid's arrow to couples throughout central Illinois for the past several decades. Employees prepare weeks in advance and even order roses before Christmas. Owner Greg Beck says the holiday does wonders for his business.
“I look at as a 2 or 3 day holiday, this year was 3 days because of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, you're going to delivery 400 to 500 packages,” said Beck.
According to the National Retail Federation, more than $1.7 billion are spent on candy and chocolates, an advantage for Maurie’s of Pekin.
“We already had cars lined up an hour before we opened,” said Valerie Bushong, Manager of Maurie's.
As shoppers continue to find the perfect gift for their loved ones, owner Karen Irons says she is privileged that customers want to share their holiday with Maurie's. “Our sales have actually tripled this week, everyone wants sweets for their valentines,” said Irons. She adds, “There are gentleman who are in their 70s and 80's and only ever bought Maurie's chocolate for their sweets, it’s a tradition that I love listening too.”
The average consumer will shell out about $136 this year. Becks Florist says their most popular items are roses and over at Maurie's chocolate frogs are on the top of everyone's list.
