Warming your hearts and filling your stomachs

People in the community are making sure everyone has a chance to enjoy the holidays.

"What you want to do is lift spirits," says Taunya Jenkins, Peoria Public Schools Family Community Liaison. "And the one way we all know we can lift spirits is to have a good meal in our tummies and feel like we've been well fed."

Peoria Public Schools is teaming up with the police department for its second annual Turkey Giveaway. Selected families within the school district are provided with a free Thanksgiving meal.

"They just have everything to make a full meal and feel like they've got a holiday dinner going on," says Jenkins.

And when volunteers deliver the care packages to those deserving families, the reactions when they open the door... priceless.

"We get all kinds of reaction," says Christopher Johnson, Peoria Public Schools Resource Officer. "Big smiles, hugs, we've had some of the families cry because we don't understand the magnitude of what a basket is doing for that family."
