PEORIA, Ill. - The Greater Peoria Family YMCA launched a new program to give youths a chance to learn about basketball and life.
The Rebound Program is a year-round program that will not only teach boys, ages 8-14, about the skills of teamwork and leadership but also spend time each week to foster development in the principles and values of the YMCA.
The program's philosophy is that basketball is something the boys earn and that excellence on the court begins with their behavior off the court.
"The whole atmosphere of the city, or the perception of the city affects all the communities that surround it," says Peoria YMCA President Andy Thornton. "We need the inner city to be strong from the entire region."
The program is free and provides meals and snacks to the boys while addressing weekly topics of honesty, respect, moral code, gangs, and more.
A halfway house could be coming to Peoria's south side.
