Peoria - Former U.S. Congressman and Peoria native Bob Michel has died at the age of 93.
He passed away early Friday morning at a hospital in Arlington, VA after battling pneumonia.
Michel represented the 18th District from 1957-1995. He served as the Minority Whip during part of his time in office. Michel was a graduate of Peoria High School and Bradley University.
Near the end of his time in public office, Michel was given the medal of presidential freedom by former President Bill Clinton.
Michel is survived by his four children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
His name will live on in a number of ways in his home city of Peoria. One of the busiest bridges in our area is named the Bob Michel Bridge. It carries Illinois route 40 over the Illinois River between Peoria and East Peoria. It was built to replace a former bridge in its place and officially opened December 16, 1993.
WMBD will continue to update this story throughout the day.
