PEORIA - With the start of school right around the corner, many parents are struggling to make ends meet,

One local organization is trying to bridge the funding gap so student will have their supplies.

“Backpacks in the Park” kicked off this evening at the Glen Oak Amphitheater.

The event was put on by Molina Health Care and Saint Paul Baptist Church.

Volunteers handed out backpacks, school supplies, and food to eager parents and children.

In all, volunteers handed out 200 backpacks, water bottles, and first aid kits.

Organizers say the community need is ever growing.

Kristie Hubbard from Saint Paul Baptist told us, “It makes us feel good because we know that is why we're here. That is why we're in the inner city of Peoria, because this is where god placed us to by a blessing to this community.”

Turnout for the event was more than expected.

In fact, Backpacks in the Park went over so well that after 15 minutes, only 4 backpacks remained.
