PEORIA COUNTY - A rural Peoria County railroad will get a needed facelift that will hopefully keep travelers safe.
Thursday, the Peoria County Board approved $200,000 to upgrade the railroad intersection near Township Road. The work includes new signs, lights and gates. The state will reimburse the county for the improvements.
In February, an accident took place at the intersection involving snow removal equipment.  Luckily, there were no serious injuries, but the incident highlighted a need for improvements.
Peoria County engineer Amy Benecke McLaren said, "The equipment did suffer damage, but in the future with gates and warming signals. We hope not to have this kind of incident in future.
The work should begin by the beginning of next year.
