PEORIA - A new movie out today plays into the myth that we only use ten percent of our brains. Scarlett Johansson plays Lucy, a woman who is able to access untapped parts of her brain.
But in reality, there is no untapped part of your brain. This myth is just that, a myth.
The cortex is ten percent of the brain where all the thinking and reasoning happens, but the other 90 percent is the support structure and connections.
However, doctors say humans actually use 100 percent of their brain almost all of the time.
“In my job, unfortunately, I get to see a lot of people who have brain injury, and I can tell you, there is no one part of the brain you can live without, not without leaving some invaluable mark on you and your life,” Dr. Deepak Nair of the Illinois Neurological Institute said.
The myth is believed to have started back in the 19th century when less technology was available to study the brain.
