PEORIA – Peoria Police are preparing for a busy weekend in the city.

Dozens of high school basketball games are taking place at the Civic Center, drawing in hundreds of people from across the state.

Plus, St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, which means the annual parade in downtown Peoria.

Lt. Steve Roegge advises drivers to be extra careful.

Some roads will be blocked off, and there will be more pedestrian traffic than usual. “On Monday, St. Patrick's Day, the route has changed a bit from previous years. It will start on Monroe, go to Main Street, come to Jefferson and go southbound on Jefferson, and end in front of the Civic Center. So we will have some closures there. So the biggest thing we're asking is with everybody who is downtown to be courteous, have a good time, but be as safe as you can."

Lt. Roegge is also asking drivers to avoid the Main and University intersection.

Heavy construction is taking place, but there are multiple detours to help drivers get around it.
