The Glen Oak Park amphitheater hosts its annual third of July fireworks.
Glen Oak Park is the hub to kick off the holiday weekend.
Mary Keltner of the Peoria Park District said, “I think this is just a fantastic evening to bring your family out to a park setting, enjoy a meal in the lawn, listen to music and spend time with your children, really teaching them about celebrating America's independence.”
Five-year-old Eldon Bowen least has an idea about the meaning behind the holiday as he waved an American flag around the park.
"Thank you!" said Bowen.
And so does the Hackman couple, who have been married for 45 years.
"Freedom. Freedom to do as we have done for many years in this country," said Larry Hackman.
The Hackman's, Larry and Shirley, demonstrate their freedom through dance, and for nearly three decades, the Glen Oak celebration has been their dance floor.
"well it started out, we'd bring all of our kids over here. It's kinda like a holiday picnic. We just continue to do it,” said Larry Hackman.
There's freedom in their steps. Their smiles are another example of independence.
"It's a unifying thing for us as a couple. We just have a lot of fun doing it. And there's just something about dancing," said Larry Hackman.
The Glen Oak Park fireworks feature performances by local artists, including community theatres, dancers and a live band.
The event is sponsored by the Peoria Park District.
