PEORIA – WMBD 31 News is your local election headquarters. We’re meeting two men who both want to be the Democratic nominee for the 18th Congressional District.

Darrel Miller is a lifelong farmer from Danvers. He’s facing Rob Mellon, a Quincy High School teacher and former Army Reserve Captain.

Both men said they want to see more progress being made in Washington D.C.

With much of the 18th district made up of farm land, we’re getting their thoughts on the recently approved Farm Bill.

Miller said, “We didn't need the increase in crop insurance. The crop insurance we have now is working fine. Except there are proposals to cap the premium subsidy that each farmer gives and I've been supporting that for a long time."

Mellon said, “I'm in agreement with the farm bill. I like farm subsidies and insurance for farmers. I think it's important because it lowers the cost of food. I know there's some criticism because some of the farms are rather large but if it lowers the cost for the average family, then I'm for that."

Whoever wins the primary will face incumbent Republican Aaron Schock in November.
