While Galesburg teachers strike, Peoria District 150 teachers are preparing to return to the classroom next week.
Teachers and staff from the entire district were invited to the Bradley University campus to rally for the upcoming school year.
Awards and recognition were handed out this morning.
Educators listened to former Washington Post reporter and keynote speaker, Wil Haygood, as he spoke about his 2008 article that inspired the movie, “The Butler.”
Haygood also said his education inspired him to become a reporter.
District Superintendent Doctor Grenita Lathan says she hopes Haywood’s message inspires the teachers.
"The message for teachers is that they do make a difference in the lives of the children that they serve and encounter on a daily basis, that they are exceptional, they are appreciated, and we're thinking they are working in our school district," said Superintendent, Dr. Grenita Lathan.
"Just seeing their faces when they walk in that first day and their excitement and enthusiasm and we're ready to do new things and keep the learning going," said Mary Ayler, Hines Elementary Teacher.
Classes for students begin on Monday.
