PEORIA - The history of the Ukraine conflict spans hundreds of years and includes the breaking up of the Soviet Union, but the consequences of violence in that area could have real-time effects in the U.S.

Angela Weck, a member of the Peoria Area World Affairs Council says Russia is a large producer of natural gas and oil to Europe, which could affect American oil prices. She says NATO is on Ukraine’s doorstep.

"So what happens with Ukraine may or may not draw NATO in and so that could be something that escalates that would draw US resources in a wide variety of ways if NATO gets engaged," Weck said.

For more watch the full interview with Weck above, where she breaks the conflict down to its roots and lays out the options for peace in the region.
