EAST PEORIA: The flying fish festival last month has been deemed a success, and coordinators are keeping the momentum going.
With almost 2000 pounds of fish collected from the Illinois River in a matter of hours, the Bowfishing Tournament took one step towards managing our large Asian Carp population. It also helped to raise money and awareness for conservation and local labor efforts.
Due to the success of the event, organizers are now looking ahead to the future.
Jim Goff, General Manager of Bass Pro Shops, says, “The 2015 date for the flying fish festival is going to be July 11th. That's Saturday, July 11th, and we hope to see you all there.”
Planning is already underway to bring in more volunteers and a bigger crowd for July 2015.
In the meantime, organizers encourage restaurant go-ers to look for Asian Carp on local menus. Eating the fish is a great solution to benefit both the environment and the local economy.
